SITE Past President, Janice Borovay Montana formed PEP Enterprises in 1982, specializing in organizing and directing large meetings, conventions and motivation programs for domestic and international corporations. The company was one of the first woman-owned, independent meetings and events companies in the industry. In addition to serving as SITE President in 1994, Janice was a member of Meeting Professionals International, the American Society of Association Executives, the Convention Liaison Council and Green Globe. She also served on advisory boards for the Motivation Show and the Joint Meetings Industry Council. Janice was the first American woman to be honored with the prestigious CMM destination by MPI and the Cornell University Hotel School of International management in Geneva. Today, Janice is CEO of BZM, Inc. a property management and real estate investment company in Phoenix, Arizona. In her “spare time” she is a competitive ballroom dancer.
As the head of one of the first woman-owned businesses in the meetings and incentive industry, what motivated you to become involved with SITE?
I have always given credit to my involvement with SITE for helping me realize my personal strengths and enabling me to grow a successful meetings and incentives business. My first exposure to SITE and the incentive travel market was in the 80’s at the ITME show in Chicago. Bob Vitigliano made a presentation on the incentive travel industry and his speech made such a strong impression on me. The following year I attended a SITE University at La Costa and the learning helped me transition PEP from being strictly a DMC to becoming a full-service, independent meetings and incentives company. At the time, the late Richard Ross was SITE President. I had just become a member and had an in-depth discussion with him at the SITE University - after that I was hooked! Richard was such a strong influence on my career, serving as an excellent mentor.
As SITE President in 1994, what were some of the issues and challenges facing the organization?
In 1994 SITE was in a very precarious financial situation and it was critical to implement changes for the long-range sustainability of the association. Not only was the industry recovering from an economic downturn, SITE was also trying to make the transition from a volunteer-driven organization to being managed by a paid staff. The evolution was challenging as some members preferred to keep the organization small and exclusive. However, in order for SITE to continue, we knew we had to change perceptions and grow membership. The vision and commitment of SITE leaders like Fay Beauchine, Dick Graham, Jane Schuldt, Richard Ross, Jim Dittman, John Udell, Patrick Delaney and others is what sustained SITE and helped keep it relevant with the evolving global industry.
What advice would you give students and young professionals entering the meetings and incentive industry today?
For young professionals in the business today, I highly encourage them to get actively involved with SITE. Take advantage of all the educational and networking opportunities that SITE and the chapters offer. In today’s multi-generational business environment, we can learn from each other. Young professionals can gain knowledge and wisdom from those that have been in the industry for a long time and the veterans can obtain energy and enthusiasm from the young professionals.
